Many people ask us 'Why Newlyn?' when there are so many other wonderful fishing ports around the UK.
For us, the answer is simple - quality and trust. Newlyn has been our first choice since the day we opened, thanks to the outstanding fish landed there every single day and the brilliant relationships we’ve built with the people who live and work around the harbour.
Perched on the far southwest tip of the UK, Newlyn has been a working port since the 15th century and is now one of Britain’s busiest fishing harbours, with more than 600 vessels and around 100 fishermen landing up to 40 different species daily. Its position beside some of the richest fishing grounds in the northern hemisphere brings a wonderfully diverse catch and the Newlyn fleet are renowned for the exceptional quality of the fish they land.
From the famous Cornish sardines and world-class Cornish hake, to stunning turbot, brill and john dory, the fishermen who land into Newlyn know that great care at sea means great value on the market floor
The fish market itself underwent a £1.3 million refurbishment in 2019, transforming it into a state-of-the-art refrigerated facility that handles every fish with precision and care. Around 4 a.m., graders begin sorting the catch by size and species, ready for the morning auction where fish is sold to the highest bidder. It can be pretty tense depending on what’s been landed and who’s after it that day!
We’re fortunate to work closely with two wonderful buyers based around Newlyn who hand-select fish for us each morning. Because of the trust we’ve built over the years, we’re often offered first dibs on some of the most exquisite, just-landed catches from the under-10m fleet - the kind of small-boat fish that never travels far and always arrives in perfect condition.
Of course, not everything is available every day — tides, weather, and sheer good luck all play their part. But one thing never changes: if the fish is on the market, and the quality is exceptional, it will find its way up the A303 to Camberley and onto our counter the very next day.
Hake, cod, haddock, monkfish, plaice, lemon sole, dover sole, turbot, brill, sand sole, skate (ray), and john dory.Depending on the season, we’ll also see bass, mackerel, sardines, gurnard, red mullet and squid - and when we’re lucky, pollack, whiting, megrim, witch sole, dabs, breams, grey mullet, dogfish (huss/rock), conger eel and whenever it's being landed - cuttlefish.
Newlyn has always felt like part of the family - we just happen to sell what they land.
