Even before we opened our doors, we knew we wanted Martin and Peter to supply us with our Newlyn Catch. Having spent many years visiting Newlyn to support the Fishermen’s Mission at the annual Fish Festival, we got to know them well and when we finally decided to open the shop, they thankfully agreed to take us on board.
Situated in the heart of Cornwall’s fishing industry Newlyn Fish Company is a small family owned business set up in 1983 by Joe & Jill Clive. Alongside sons Martin and Peter, the team have been sourcing the best Cornish Catch for over 30 years.
Each morning Peter heads down to Newlyn market at 5am ready to select the best of the days catch. The port of Newlyn has a mixed fleet, including lots of small ‘dayboat’ vessels. With the diversity of species found along the South West coast, it means (weather and tides permitting) we see a great variety and the quality of the catch is always spectacular.
While Peter is busy with his buying, Martin keeps in touch with us to let us know which boats have landed and what we’re likely to see that day. As soon as the market is over the fish is taken to their purpose built processing unit, where its prepared by highly skilled filleters, before being packed beautifully and put on the lorry to make its way up the A303 to Camberley.
It’s been a really rewarding working with Martin & Peter. Their focus on quality has made a huge difference to our business, and the fish they source for us each day has been outstanding.
